What makes us Solara Kennels?
We have been passionate about dog showmanship and ethical breeding from a young age. The small spark that began as simple fascination in the world of dogs has ignited to what we can proudly call Solara Kennels. Prior to Solara, we bred and showed Pomeranians for several years, but realized they were not the perfect fit for our young and growing family. In 2020, we purchased our first poodle and our lives were forever changed.
With almost 10 years of experience, we have had the privilege of learning, alongside the best, what it takes to create a healthy, well-rounded dog. From our experience, the best advice we can give to anyone is that genetics matter. It matters who the parents are, what their temperaments can/can't tolerate, their conformation & genetic makeup, and their general health. Believe it or not, grooming tolerance, food pickiness, friendliness, biddability, drive, gait, and the breakdown of the body are all linked to genetics. That is why we health and temperament test every dog we consider breeding in our program. We use a diverse array of testing tools to see the most comprehensive view of our dogs' attributes. This allows us to make informed breeding decisions to improve the next generation. The testing tools we use include, but are not limited to: OFA, PennHip, CHIC number qualification, Embark DNA testing, PawPrint Genetic testing, UC Davis Genetic testing, Diversity testing, and Temperament testing.
**OFA failed exams, hereditary disease affected dogs, and anxious/aggressive behavior is an automatic cut to our program.
The second best advice we can give is that it matters how the puppies are raised. Breeders essentially provide the foundation of their puppies' entire lives. That foundation can influence lifelong habits and behavioral attributes and it is why it is important that future owner's consider the type of environment their puppy is coming from. This includes the cleanliness of their environment, the habits that are instilled, the exposure the puppies receive, the diet the puppies are fed, and the framework of behavior that is set from the beginning. Any one of these factors can affect the long-term health and life of any puppy. At Solara Kennels, we raise every puppy with intention and passion. We do our best to ensure our puppies leave us with the best possible chance at a long, happy life. Our puppy foundation protocol includes: ENS & ESI exercises, early sound & scent exposure, grooming exposure & desensitization (beginning at 2 weeks), touch desensitization (hands, feet, mouth, etc.), litter box training, basic command training, puppy recall training, Volhard temperament testing, early socialization (with livestock, children, cats, dogs, and new people) and, of course, lots of love and cuddles!
